Quan Li

I am a tenure-track assistant professor at School of Information Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University, also affiliated with Fintech Initiative and HCI Initiative, SIST, ShanghaiTech University. I am serving as the Co-Director (联合中心主任) of Visual and Data Intelligence Center (VDI), SIST, ShanghaiTech University this period.

I received my Ph.D. at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where my supervisors are Prof. Xiaojuan Ma and Prof. Huamin Qu. Before joining HKUST, I was a senior researcher at NetEase Games, a leading Chinese game operator. I obtained my master's degree from Tsinghua University, supervised by Prof. Li Chen, and bachelor's degree from Wuhan University. I have another bachelor's degree in English Literature at School of Foreign Language, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Before joining ShanghaiTech, I was a senior research scientist at WeBank AI Group.

We welcome undergraduate/graduate students and visiting interns/scholars. Please send me your CV if you are interested in these topics or have any question.

Prior to contacting our lab, ShanghaiTech undergraduate students should ensure they have completed either the Data Visualization and (or) Human Computer Interaction courses and (or) Human-AI Interaction (This course be offered at Spring 2025).

Research

My research focuses on the areas of Big Data Visualization and Visual Analytics, Data Science, Interpretable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), Data Storytelling, Human-Computer Interaction, and Computational Social Science. I develop advanced interaction and visual analytics techniques that promote the interplay between humans, machines, and data, aiming to boost the efficiency of real-world data analytical activities that involve a large amount of data, various complicated models, and a diverse group of users with different backgrounds. I contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of visualizations that support the general data science workflow: from Interactive Data Exploration, then to Model Development and Interpretation, and finally to Insight Communication and Storytelling.

Our ViSeer LAB at ShanghaiTech focuses on advancing research in the following three key areas:

1. Human-Centered Explainable AI Models and Their Applications: Combining interactive visual analytics with automated machine learning techniques to build human-centered explainable AI. By enhancing trustworthiness, fairness, and robustness, this approach promotes the deep integration of human-AI collaboration within the field of explainable AI.

2. AI-Driven Interactive Design and Evaluation: Focusing on the innovative applications of AI in interactive design and evaluation, this research delves into areas such as automatic task mining, automated visualization, interactive systems, and data narrative generation, aiming to drive the development of intelligent, personalized visualization solutions.

3. Human-AI Collaborative Visual Analytics for Major Societal Issues: Addressing significant societal challenges, this research leverages human-AI collaborative visual analytics techniques to provide innovative decision support tools, facilitating the implementation and optimization of data-driven solutions.
