Welcome to my homepage! I am a tenured associate professor in the School of Information Science and Technology@ ShanghaiTech University. I direct the Intelligence, Information and Decision Lab @ SIST!

I received my Ph.D. from the information engineering department @ The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010. My advisor was Prof. Shuo-Yen Robert Li (Bob li). I was then a postdoctoral researcher, first worked with Prof. Minghua Chen until November 2012, then worked with Prof. Bob Li and Prof. Raymond Yeung until December 2013. Prior to my Ph.D., I received my B.S. and M.E from Peking University, Beijing, China, both in EE.

Prof. Jean Walrand@UC Berkeley served as a member of my Ph.D. Thesis Committee.

In 2012, I was a visiting research fellow at the EE department @ Princeton University.

In 2017, I was a visiting professor at the RISELab (previously AMPLab) of EECS department @ University of California at Berkeley, working with Prof. Ion Stoica and Prof. Michael Jordan.

I was also a visiting scientist at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at Berkeley.

My Erdos Number is 3 with the three-hop path: Ziyu Shao, Shuo-Yen Robert Li, Ronald Graham, Paul Erdos

My Einstein Number is 4 with the four-hop path: Ziyu Shao, Shuo-Yen Robert Li, Ronald Graham, Ernst Straus, Albert Einstein

I am a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM.

Students and Postdocs: I am constantly looking for highly motivated students (undergrad and graduate) and postdocs who are interested in network intelligence, learning and optimization, cloud computing and edge computing, and data science. Please email me if you are interested.

Visiting Scholars and Visiting PhD Students: I am always looking for self-motivated visiting scholars and PhD students who are passionate about combination of AI and networks. Excellent applicants’ expenses at ShanghaiTech can be covered. Please email me if you are interested.

Recent News

  • April 2021: Initialization of the textbook writing with title ‘‘Probability and Statistics for Artificial Intelligence’’.

  • October 2020: Initialization of the book writing with title ‘‘When Shannon Meets Ramanujan: A Principled Design for Large-Scale Network Topology’’.

  • January 2020: I received the Google Faculty Award!

  • December 2019: Paper ‘‘Systematic Topology Design for Large-Scale Networks: A Unified Framework’’ accepted to INFOCOM 2020! With Shannon-style thinking and reverse/forward engineering mentality, by adopting Ramanujan theorems and cross disciplinary domain knowledge, we solved a very important open problem: ‘‘how to systematically design large-scale network topologies’’.
